This mainly checks central vision—the sharp, detailed part of what you see when you look directly at something. The Amsler grid features a central fixation point and a uniform pattern of straight lines. By focusing on the center, you watch for any distortions in the lines or areas where the grid looks blurred or missing. Such changes point to problems in the macula or fovea, the retina regions responsible for high-acuity, detailed vision. This is why the test is used to monitor conditions that affect central vision, like macular disease. It isn’t designed to measure color vision, depth perception, or the far peripheral fields, which are assessed with other tests.
